Why Church Still Matters

In a culture where Sunday morning can easily become just another day of the week, it’s worth asking: Why should I go to church?

For a Bible-believing Christian, church attendance isn’t merely a religious obligation. It is one of the ways God has designed us to grow in our relationship with Him and with

one another.

First, we go to church to worship God. God is worthy of our praise, and gathering with other believers gives us an opportunity to exalt Him together. Worship reminds us that life is not ultimately about us—it’s about Him.

Second, we go to church to hear God’s Word. The Bible is God’s truth, and faithful

preaching and teaching help us understand it, apply it, and grow in our faith. Romans 10:17 reminds us that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Third, we go to church because we need other believers. Christianity was never

intended to be lived in isolation. We need encouragement, prayer, accountability,

friendship, and the opportunity to encourage others. Hebrews 10:24–25 tells us not to forsake assembling together, but to encourage one another.

Fourth, we go to church to serve. God has given every believer spiritual gifts and

opportunities to minister to others. Church isn’t just a place where we come to receive; it’s a place where we come to give—to serve Christ by serving His people.

And finally, we go to church because we belong to Christ’s family. The church is not

simply a building or an organization. It is the body of Christ, made up of those who

have trusted in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

So, why go to church?

Because we need God. We need His Word. We need His people. And, perhaps just as

importantly, other people need us.

Church attendance won’t save you—only faith in Jesus Christ can do that. But if you

belong to Christ, gathering regularly with His people is not something you should see

as a burden. It is a privilege—and one of God’s good gifts to us.

That said, Sunday, September 20, is a great opportunity to come and see what church

is all about! It’s our “Come and See Sunday,” and it also marks the beginning of a new

sermon series, “Who Is Jesus?” The series will explore the seven “I AM” statements of

Jesus recorded in the Gospel of John.

And there’s another reason to join us: after the service, everyone will be treated to a

fabulous lunch from a gourmet food truck!
